About Personal Protection
Whether out in the garden, garage or enjoying sports activities, it is important to keep yourself safe from the various work hazards. This involves use of personal protective equipment and other safety equipment. This equipment acts as a barrier between dangerous elements and compounds that are found in the work area and the air around. Common personal protective equipment includes things like gloves, helmets, heavy jackets, face masks and foot-wear among others.
Other than protecting your body from harm, safety equipment also improve working conditions. For instance, I would not be comfortable spraying insecticide in my garden without wearing a mask! Given the hazardous nature of nearly all known insecticides, it would be foolhardy to expose myself to all those chemicals. Take a simple task like fixing a broken piece of metal frame in the garage for instance. It would probably involve a bit of welding. This means I have to wear some protective goggles to keep my eyes unaffected by the glare. Gloves are a requisite for any work that involves handling of sharp or heavy material such as metal and glass. Material for gloves ranges from leather to woven fabric, depending on the kind of job you engage in. When selecting gloves to work in, it is important to choose those with additional grips either on the entire palm or the fingers, especially if your work involves lifting and carrying heavy things.
Perhaps the best example of places where personal safety is given the highest priority is in the industries. There are safety standards put in place for most industrial settings, upon which the industries operate. Most industrial employers are required by law to provide their workers with protective wear. Those dealing with gas production and processing need face masks as most gas fumes are dangerous to the eyes, nose and mouth.
Even the simplest of chores requires you to protect your feet unless of course you are working indoors where the flooring is clean. I make sure that I have at least two pairs of boots for different jobs. Leather and rubber boots are my favorite for working around the compound. Any repair and construction works I have to attend to require that I use heavier boots, preferably steel-toed ones. There are chances that stones, bricks, slabs and tools could fall on me and they are awfully painful when they hit a bare toe! Steel helmets are a must have for this.
There is one aspect of personal protection I have learned never to overlook – putting safety measures in place. This is very important as it forestalls different forms of danger. It includes installing a fire detector in the house, fuse-controls on all your electrical devices and a gas leak detector. I highly recommend having all the above-mentioned safety devices in place. My phobia for fires and the fatal damage which they cause makes me vouch for these control measures regardless of how safe a place is said to be.
Take the time to buy all the protection gear you can lay your hands on. It will cut down your health expenses by a huge percentage.
